The audio streaming leader is providing previews that reveal potential updates to its iOS applications, showcasing new options for EU consumers including transparent pricing details, diverse subscription offerings, and direct in-app purchasing capabilities. These changes come ahead of the enactment of the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA) on March 7th.
Under the impending DMA directives, restrictions like "anti-steering" will be abolished. Anti-steering policies have historically allowed platform proprietors, such as Apple, to block app creators from directing users toward alternative purchasing or subscription methods. Furthermore, the DMA seeks to stop gatekeepers from mandating that developers must utilize their payment systems exclusively.

As of now, Apple's official strategy for aligning with the forthcoming DMA guidelines remains unclear. Spotify's current release serves as a speculative exploration into this new landscape, one that's still dominated by Apple's overarching platform governance — which could present unforeseen barriers for firms eager to leverage the freedoms afforded by the DMA.
